Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain "Sous Roche" 2020

91 points, Robert Parker

A terrific effort from the Buisson brothers, the 2020 Saint-Romain Sous Roches bursts with scents of wild berries, plums, loamy soil and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, saline finish, it transcends expectations of the appellation.

Tasting Profile

  • Body: Medium-bodied
  • Tannins: Fine-grained and well-integrated. They provide a firm yet supple structure, contributing to the wine's length and aging potential without feeling aggressive or overly grippy in its youth. They add a pleasing textural dimension to the finish.
  • Acidity: Medium-plus and vibrant, a hallmark of Saint-Romain. This lively acidity provides a crucial freshness and lift, perfectly balancing the wine's fruit and contributing to a long, clean, and invigorating finish. It keeps the wine feeling energetic and focused.
  • Sweetness: Dry

Tasting Notes: Upon the first swirl, the Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain "Sous Roche" 2020 reveals an enticing bouquet of bright red cherries and wild raspberries, intertwined with delicate floral notes of violets and a hint of rose hips. As the wine opens, more complex aromas emerge, including a distinct mineral character often described as crushed stone or damp earth, along with subtle hints of forest floor, a touch of balsamic, and a whisper of baking spice from its gentle oak aging. On the palate, the wine is pure and expressive, with the vibrant red fruit flavors beautifully framed by the fine-grained tannins and the lively acidity. A savory iron-like minerality adds depth and precision, leading to a long and elegant finish that echoes with notes of red fruit, subtle spice, and a persistent earthy, mineral resonance. This is a Burgundian Pinot Noir of excellent purity and terroir expression.

Discover the Winery: Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson

The Buisson family name is etched deep into the history of Saint-Romain, the high elevation appellation in its own little Burgundy nook, to the west of Meursault and north of Auxey-Duresses. The Buissons reach back to the 12th century but they boast a semi-official start date of 1758. Their ‘modern’ history reflects that of Saint-Romain itself, when in 1947 the climat was granted AOC status, and the pioneering Henri Buisson moved from farming to estate-bottling the first ever Saint-Romain AOC wines. Henri’s son Gilles took over in the 1980s, and he in turn passed the torch to brothers Franck and Frederick, who are the eighth generation of family vignerons. Eleven of the twenty-odd hectares of estate-owned vines are in Saint-Romain, across eight different sites, headlined by the signature plots of Sous La Velle for Chardonnay and Sous Roche for Pinot Noir. The remaining holdings are spread across Cote de Beaune, Volnay, Pommard, Meursault and three plots on the hill of Corton. They were very early exponents of organic and biodynamic vineyard practice, and are fully certified as organic (AB, or Association Biologique via Ecocert in 2006) and biodynamic (2019 through Biodyvin). Since 2017 they have also expanded their range through judicious ’exchanges of fruit’ with a number of certified organic producers in Chassagne, Santenay and Macon with more to come. These wines are labelled as Maison Buisson rather than Domaine Buisson. The Buisson family name is etched deep into the history of Saint-Romain, the high elevation appellation in its own little Burgundy nook, to the west of Meursault and north of Auxey-Duresses.
