Pierre Damoy Fixin "Les Mogottes" 2019

92 points, Wine Spectator

Dense and rich, with generous blackberry and black cherry fruit flavors, this velvety red is a crowd-pleaser. Yet this also has a dark, brooding edge that infuses elements of iron, tobacco and beefy tannins. Spicy finish. Drink now through 2032.

(Winemaker)

"It has aromas of smoke, violet, blackberry and black cherry. It is above all a fleshy wine, broad and opulent, but not devoid of tannic suppleness, with a silky texture. It dispenses its beautiful perfumes in retro-olfaction and only expands with aeration. It will benefit from maturing for 12 years and more."

Tasting Notes: Upon the first swirl, the Pierre Damoy Fixin "Les Mogottes" 2019 reveals an intense and captivating bouquet of dark cherry, blackcurrant, and wild berries, intertwined with nuanced notes of violet, licorice, and a distinct earthy minerality that speaks of the Côte de Nuits. As the wine opens, deeper aromatic complexities emerge, including hints of underbrush, cigar box, and a subtle clove or spice from the careful oak aging. On the palate, the wine is powerful and concentrated, delivering a rich tapestry of dark fruit flavors that mirror the nose. Notes of forest floor, a touch of game, and a pronounced iron-like minerality unfold, all supported by the powerful yet polished tannins and the vibrant acidity. The texture is structured and layered, leading to an exceptionally long, savory, and complex finish, leaving a lingering impression of dark fruit, mineral depth, and a hint of dark chocolate. This is a formidable and age-worthy Burgundian Pinot Noir, showcasing the robust elegance of Fixin.

Discover the Winery: Domaine Pierre Damoy

History Born in 1844 into a family of farmers, Julien Damoy was a Norman self-made man who began his career as a simple grocer's clerk before moving to Paris where he created an eponymous grocery store on Boulevard Sébastopol. The Julien Damoy brand quickly became a prosperous company, owning several grocery stores in the North of France and becoming one of the largest in France during the Belle Époque, employing 500 people in 1905 and up to 2,400 in 1936. The origins of the current estate date back to the beginning of the 20th century when Julien Damoy, a great wine lover, bought land for vineyards when viticulture was at its worst, following the Phylloxera crisis. A visionary, he successfully bet on the future, creating an exceptional legacy for future generations, in this case his great-great-grandson Pierre Damoy. Domaine Pierre Damoy is an exception in the heart of Burgundy, recognized for the incomparable richness of its vines with about 10% of the Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin owned. The estate concentrates its grands crus on three of the nine climats of the commune, and is particularly distinguished as the main owner of the Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze, with a third of the total surface area of this emblematic terroir. This unique anchorage allows a selection of blended plots in order to reveal the splendour of this climate. The estate also owns nearly a third of the Chapelle-Chambertin appellation as well as half a hectare of the Chambertin appellation. Its atypical character is also based on an exceptional heritage of old vines, many of which were planted in the 1920s. The most recent vines are now mature enough to offer grapes with low but constant yields, giving rise to wines of rare quality.
