92 points, Tim Atkin

If you like full-bodied, deep, virile and vinous Gevrey, which gain finesse and expression with time, this superb village has all the arguments to convince you. Intensely coloured, it has a beautiful fresh nose, full of black fruit, zan, and finely malted vanilla bean nuances. Its fullness and vinosity are surprising for a "village" appellation wine. Dense but fresh, with a depth of flavour and sweetness due to the high phenolic maturity, it does not lack length or class.

  • Acidity: Medium-plus to high, providing a crucial freshness and vibrant lift that perfectly balances the wine's inherent richness and concentration. This lively acidity ensures excellent equilibrium, prevents the wine from feeling heavy, and contributes to its exceptional length and ageability, maintaining a sense of precision and energy.
  • Sweetness: Dry

Tasting Notes: Upon the first swirl, the Pierre Damoy Gevrey-Chambertin 2018 reveals a deep and multifaceted bouquet that immediately asserts its Gevrey identity. Dominant aromas of dark cherry compote, blackcurrant, and wild forest berries intermingle with more complex, savory notes of rich potting soil, underbrush, and a distinctive ferrous minerality often likened to iron or blood, a signature of Gevrey. Nuances of sweet spices like clove and vanilla, along with a hint of cedar and tobacco leaf, emerge from the carefully managed oak. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and elegantly structured, delivering a concentrated core of dark fruit flavors that are beautifully framed by the firm yet refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Layers of licorice, game meat, and a persistent earthy depth unfold, leading to an exceptionally long, deeply savory, and complex finish. The overall impression is one of muscular grace, a wine that is both intensely flavored and impeccably balanced, promising a long and rewarding evolution.

Discover the Winery: Domaine Pierre Damoy

History Born in 1844 into a family of farmers, Julien Damoy was a Norman self-made man who began his career as a simple grocer's clerk before moving to Paris where he created an eponymous grocery store on Boulevard Sébastopol. The Julien Damoy brand quickly became a prosperous company, owning several grocery stores in the North of France and becoming one of the largest in France during the Belle Époque, employing 500 people in 1905 and up to 2,400 in 1936. The origins of the current estate date back to the beginning of the 20th century when Julien Damoy, a great wine lover, bought land for vineyards when viticulture was at its worst, following the Phylloxera crisis. A visionary, he successfully bet on the future, creating an exceptional legacy for future generations, in this case his great-great-grandson Pierre Damoy. Domaine Pierre Damoy is an exception in the heart of Burgundy, recognized for the incomparable richness of its vines with about 10% of the Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin owned. The estate concentrates its grands crus on three of the nine climats of the commune, and is particularly distinguished as the main owner of the Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze, with a third of the total surface area of this emblematic terroir. This unique anchorage allows a selection of blended plots in order to reveal the splendour of this climate. The estate also owns nearly a third of the Chapelle-Chambertin appellation as well as half a hectare of the Chambertin appellation. Its atypical character is also based on an exceptional heritage of old vines, many of which were planted in the 1920s. The most recent vines are now mature enough to offer grapes with low but constant yields, giving rise to wines of rare quality.
