Iconic Wines

This is the first vintage produced after the death of vintner Gianfranco Soldera at 82 years old on February 16, 2019. His family took over farming and winemaking, and the Soldera Case Basse 2019 100% Sangiovese is an enduring symbol of that painful transition. This is an extremely elegant wine that defies the simplicity of the process used to make it. Grapes are destemmed and fermented as whole berries in oversize truncated cone-shaped Slavonian oak vats with native yeasts. The wine ages slowly and uninterrupted, depending on the vintage, for four years in large oak botte. It is bottled without filtering, and this vintage rested in glass for six months before its commercial release in 2024. Natural and straightforward winemaking results in delicate and ethereal notes of redcurrant, iris root and fragrant tea leaf. The power of the fruit, especially those tart cherry nuances, is more prominent in the 2019 vintage that also succeeds in providing more textural heft and importance to the mid-palate. The 2019 vintage should prove especially well-suited to prolonged cellar aging. Drink 2028-2058.

Tasting Profile

  • Body: Full-bodied
  • Tannins: The tannins in the 2019 Soldera are pronounced yet refined. They are present and provide a firm backbone to the wine, contributing to its ageability and structure. While youthful, these tannins are typically well-integrated, showing a quality that suggests they will soften and become even more elegant with time in the bottle. They offer a pleasant grip and a lingering textural presence.
  • Acidity: The acidity is a defining characteristic of great Sangiovese, and in the 2019 Soldera, it is high and vibrant. This lively acidity provides a wonderful freshness and lift to the wine, balancing its concentration and contributing to a long and mouthwatering finish. It's a key element that ensures the wine's aging potential and prevents it from feeling ponderous.
  • Sweetness: Dry

Tasting Notes: The 2019 Sangiovese captivates with an array of exotic spices, dried orange peels, incense, hints of worn leather and radiant black cherries. Lifted, precise, ethereal and weightless yet impactful, it sweeps across the palate, lifted and refined. It features aromas of mineral-laced wild berry fruits, taking on a beguiling savoriness toward the close. Nuances of sour citrus combine with sage and cedar dust over a web of fine-grained tannins. It comes across as a classic, finishing with a pleasantly bitter tinge of clove and a bite of sour citrus. This is pure magic. The 2019 embodies all the best attributes of this fantastic vintage.

Discover the Winery: Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera

Gianfranco Soldera, who worked as an insurance broker – arguably one of Tuscany's most memorable personalities – bought the Casse Basse winery in the Brunelo di Montalcino area in 1972, which owned 12 hectares of vineyards. The southwest-oriented Solderos wine farm is located at an altitude of 320 m. Together with his wife Graziella and daughter Monica, he created a kind of oasis on his 20-hectare farm with a forest, rose and apple orchards, a pond and, of course, vineyards. Bees grown in hives protect against pests that destroy grapes, so pesticides can be avoided in vineyards. The winery itself is established deep underground – excellent air circulation and 85 percent humidity is naturally maintained. Since the 1980s, Gianfranco has been promoting the months-long fermentation of natural yeast wine in large Slovenian oak tubs without any temperature control. Very few sulfites are used to stabilize the wine. Gianfranco believes that "the best wine is made from unmixed grape juice – barola, brunel and burgundy", so he grows only Sangiovese grapes. Another of his mottos is that time is the most important thing if you are trying to achieve perfection, so he ages the wine in large Slovenian oak barrels for 5-6 years. It is interesting that such a family, which is based on traditional values, pays special attention to modern wine and environmental research: special meteorological stations record even the slightest differences in climate at a distance of just a few tens of meters from each other. Cooperation is carried out with the universities of Florence and Milan. Gianfranco has even established a special scholarship for the best young scientist in the field of winemaking. However, after an incident at the end of 2012 in which burglars smashed wooden barrels full of wine and poured almost all of the wine from 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 on the floor, Gianfranco was not jokingly angry and decided to stop selling the wine on the Italian market at all, as well as withdrawing from Brunello di Montalcino's appeal. The winery produces only one wine. In a good harvest year, only 15 thousand. Bottles of "Soldera" wine, more complex (e.g. in 2002) – only 6 thousand. It is an extremely rare legendary Italian wine that adorns the wineries of the world's best restaurants. Wine critics agree that Gianfranco Soldera's wine is one of the purest and most elegant Brunello di Montalcino wines.
