Comando G Sierra de Gredos 'Rozas Premier-Primer Cru' 2021

95 points, Robert Parker

The last vintage of the Rozas 1er Cru as it is now is the 2021, because the wine changes in 2022. The 2021 Rozas 1er Cru, a lieu-dit red from the village of Rozas de Puerto Real, is from the same plots as in previous years but cropped from a cool year. They used full clusters with long macerations, an infusion, and it aged in large oak foudres for one year. It's a serious, austere and cold vintage for this wine, which is narrow, mineral and sharp but with full development of flavors, as they picked the grapes at very good ripeness, and the wine finished with 14% alcohol. With time in the glass, it developed some Rhône-ish meaty notes. It has very fine and elegant tannins, rounder than those in warmer years. It feels superb. 14,761 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

Tasting Profile

  • Body: Medium-bodied
  • Tannins: Firm and chalky, fine-grained and velvety, providing structure but remaining elegant and well-integrated, rather than aggressive.

  • Sweetness: Dry

Tasting Notes: On the palate, this Garnacha will offer a complex and ethereal array of tasting notes. Expect bright, pure red fruit characters such as strawberry, raspberry, and pomegranate, often with a distinct citrus undercurrent of grapefruit or blood orange zest that adds a refreshing zing. There's often a beautiful floral dimension, hinting at violets or rose petals, alongside a delicate peppery spice. A signature of these high-altitude Gredos Garnachas is a savory, earthy, and mineral backbone, sometimes described as flinty or stony, and potentially a subtle wild game or animal musk note that adds intrigue. The overall impression is one of purity, precision, and a long, bone-dry finish that resonates with freshness and subtle mineral tension.

Discover the Winery: Comando G

Comando G is a pioneering winery located in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range, near Madrid, Spain. Founded by Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi and Fernando García, the winery focuses on producing small quantities of exceptional Garnacha (Grenache) wines that highlight the unique terroir of this high-altitude region. The pair sought to rejuvenate the area’s ancient viticulture, where old, gnarled vines, some over 100 years old, thrive on steep, rocky, and granitic soils. Their commitment to sustainability, organic farming, and minimal intervention winemaking allows the distinct character of Gredos’ microclimates to shine through in each bottle. Comando G’s philosophy revolves around purity, expressing the essence of Garnacha while reflecting the vineyard’s natural surroundings. The wines are crafted using traditional methods, with native yeasts for fermentation and aging in large, old oak foudres to preserve freshness and balance. Their portfolio includes single-vineyard wines from renowned sites like Las Rozas and Navatalgordo, each offering a unique expression of the region. These wines are known for their complexity, freshness, and elegance, showing a balance of vibrant fruit, minerality, and subtle oak influence. Comando G has quickly garnered international acclaim for its dedication to quality and terroir-driven wines.
