92 points, James Suckling

A delicious, sanguine and lively white. It shows aromas of grapefruit, quince peel, fresh herbs and some wet stones. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Plenty of juicy and succulent character. Refreshing yet serious, with a crisp and flavorful finish.

Discover the Winery: Domaine Henri Bourgeois

In the village of Chavignol, tucked into the limestone folds of the eastern Loire, Domaine Henri Bourgeois has been cultivating its legacy for over ten generations. What began in the early 1950s with just two hectares of vines has grown into one of Sancerre’s most respected estates—built on family tradition, meticulous craftsmanship, and a profound respect for terroir. Today, the domaine oversees 72 hectares across the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, with vineyards spanning a range of soils: flint, limestone-clay, and Kimmeridgian marl. Each parcel is treated individually, with vineyard practices tailored to reflect the identity of the land. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir form the core of the estate’s production, interpreted through a lens that prioritizes precision, texture, and minerality. Organic viticulture, a natural extension of the family's philosophy, has been steadily implemented across the estate. With the 2023 vintage, all wines carry organic certification—a milestone that underscores their ongoing commitment to sustainability and transparency, both in the vineyard and in the glass. The portfolio reflects both breadth and specificity. Wines like “Les Baronnes” provide a clear, classic expression of Sancerre—citrus-driven, mineral, and impeccably clean—while single-vineyard cuvées such as “La Bourgeoise,” “La Côte des Monts Damnés,” and “Jadis” delve into greater nuance. These are wines that move beyond typicity, drawing out the particularity of slope, soil, and sun with clarity and finesse. Domaine Henri Bourgeois has also extended its reach beyond the Loire. In 2000, the family established Clos Henri in Marlborough, New Zealand, applying their expertise in Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir to a radically different landscape. The result is a dialogue between hemispheres—Old World methodology meeting New World vitality. Still family-run, the estate is now guided by Jean-Marie, Arnaud, Lionel, and Jean-Christophe Bourgeois. Their stewardship blends continuity with innovation, ensuring the domaine remains rooted in its values while adapting to the evolving world of wine. Domaine Henri Bourgeois is more than a benchmark for Sancerre—it is a study in generational commitment, terroir-driven clarity, and the quiet power of thoughtful viticulture.
