Château Giscours Margaux 2019

97 points, James Suckling

A ripe and layered red with lots of currant and chocolate character, as well as some walnut and cocoa powder. Crushed stones, too. It’s full and layered with round tannins and a juicy and plush texture. Crushed velvet that turns to silk. Very cool and long. Plenty going on here. Give it three to four years to come together. But will age beautifully for years to come. A blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot. Try after 2026.

Tasting Profile

  • Body: Full-bodied
  • Tannins: Fine-grained, silky, and well-polished tannins.
  • Acidity: Bright, animating, and well-integrated acidity that provides freshness and balance to the wine's rich fruit and silky tannins.
  • Sweetness: Dry

Tasting Notes: The 2019 Giscours is ripe and extrovert on the nose with exuberant black cherries, blueberry and crushed violets bursting from the glass. This is very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a tang of seaweed infusing the black fruit on the entry, segueing into more tarry notes toward the well structured finish. This articulates a sense of completeness and the persistency is impressive.

Discover the Winery: Château Giscours

In 1847, Château was built in the Renaissance style as we know it today, then gradually its famous park was developed and production tools were modernized. At the famous 1855 wine classification, Château Giscours was named Third Grand Cru Classé. Taken over in 1995 by the Jelgersma family, meticulous work was carried out in the vineyard and winery to restore the property's reputation. Today, the vineyard comprises 100 hectares of vines: 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 15 to 17 months in 50% new French oak barrels. The estate produces a Second wine, La Sirène de Giscours, as well as a third wine classified as Haut-Médoc, the Haut-Médoc de Giscours. The wines of Château Giscours are synonymous with refinement and aromatic richness, carried on the fruit and apt to wait for long ageing.
